15 Minute Relationship Fix Outline
Hold an emotional conference with your partner by following the steps below:
- Set time aside. Preferably once a week, set time aside to talk with your partner about something that came up recently or something that has just been on your mind.
- Prepare. Sort your own thoughts out 5 minutes before you are going to speak with your partner.
- Share your feelings. Use ‘I’ statements to talk about your feelings with your partner.
- Understand. Have your partner demonstrate an understanding of your feelings, without analyzing them. If they understood, then it’s their turn. If they didn’t understand, then take some more time to discuss.
- Take turns. Now it’s your partner’s turn. Listen to your partner as they talk about something that’s on their mind and demonstrate an understanding to them.
- Reflect. Think about the issues that got brought up and examine them to see if their may be an underlying issue, often times this can be linked back to your childhood. Remember, it is important to understand each other, not necessarily to agree with each other. Taking the time to share feelings openly with your partner, without retaliation, can improve interpersonal skills, including empathy.
